in Work and Life

Self-Awareness
(Adapted from Emotional Intelligence at Work - Hendrie
Websinger)
Being aware of your feelings and behavior
as well as others' perceptions of you can influence your actions in such
a way that they work to your benefit. Self-Awareness is about knowing
one's internal states, preferences, resources, and intuitions.
Examine how you make appraisals
- Use I-think Statements
- Regularly engage in inner dialogue
- Reflect on encounters when you are
calm
- Seek input from others
Work on making more accurate appraisals
- Remember that appraisal, not behavior,
causes reaction
- Acknowledge your appraisals are your
own
- Accept that appraisals are subject to
change
Tune into your senses
- Distinguish between sensory data and
appraisals
- Practice increasing your sensory
awareness
Get in touch with your feelings
- Become attuned to corresponding
physical manifestations
- Become attuned to corresponding
behavioral manifestations
- Keep a journal
Learn what your intentions are
- Believe your behavior
- Trust your feelings
- Be honest with yourself
Pay attention to your actions
- Monitor your actions
- Observe the impact of your actions
- Recognize that there are different ways
that people can respond to your actions
Summary
Ask yourself every day:
- What am I feeling right now?
- What do I want?
- How am I acting?
