Ten Tips for Developing High Self-Awareness
(Adapted from Emotional Intelligence at Work - Hendrie Websinger)

Being aware of your feelings and behavior as well as others' perceptions of you can influence your actions in such a way that they work to your benefit. Self-Awareness is about knowing one's internal states, preferences, resources, and intuitions.

Examine how you make appraisals

  • Use I-think Statements
  • Regularly engage in inner dialogue
  • Reflect on encounters when you are calm
  • Seek input from others

Work on making more accurate appraisals

  • Remember that appraisal, not behavior, causes reaction
  • Acknowledge your appraisals are your own
  • Accept that appraisals are subject to change

Tune into your senses

  • Distinguish between sensory data and appraisals
  • Practice increasing your sensory awareness

Get in touch with your feelings

  • Become attuned to corresponding physical manifestations
  • Become attuned to corresponding behavioral manifestations
  • Keep a journal

Learn what your intentions are

  • Believe your behavior
  • Trust your feelings
  • Be honest with yourself

Pay attention to your actions

  • Monitor your actions
  • Observe the impact of your actions
  • Recognize that there are different ways that people can respond to your actions

Summary

Ask yourself every day:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What do I want?
  • How am I acting?
